Auction Consultancy — Honest Advice, Best Results

Selling through auction should be straightforward. But it often isn't. The wrong auction house, the wrong catalogue description, or the wrong sale date can cost you significantly. Lines & Son exists to make sure none of that happens.

We are entirely independent. We have no saleroom, no preferred partner, and no financial interest in where your items sell. Our job is to find the right room, at the right time, with the right estimate — and to see it through from start to finish.

What auction consultancy means in practice

For sellers

We assess your item or collection, advise on realistic estimates and reserves, prepare catalogue descriptions, and recommend the auction house best placed to achieve the result you want. We manage the consignment on your behalf and stay across the process until hammer falls.

For buyers

We attend sales on your behalf, apply professional judgement on condition and value, and bid to a ceiling you set. We handle collection and can arrange delivery to your door.

East Anglian art specialists

Norwich School and East Anglian artists are a specialism, not a side note. Kevin has spent three decades studying, buying, and selling East Anglian art. If you have inherited a picture and are not sure what it is, start here.

Why independence matters

Most auction consultants have a saleroom — which means they have a preference. We do not. When Kevin tells you that your piece belongs at a particular house in London rather than a provincial room, it is because that is genuinely the best commercial decision for you. There is no other factor at play.

This is the model Kevin's father, John Lines, worked to. It is the model Kevin built Lines & Son on. And it is why solicitors, estate managers, and private collectors return to us year after year.

30 years. Every major saleroom.

Kevin Lines spent 28 years at Keys Auctioneers in Norfolk — one of East Anglia's most respected regional rooms — followed by senior roles at Bishop & Miller and Hansons. He has placed items at Bonhams, Christie's, Sotheby's, Cheffins, Durrants, Sworders, and many other specialist and regional houses across the UK. He knows their specialists, their buyers, and their results.

Freddy Lines, the third generation, focuses on contemporary East Anglian artists — including Jack Cox, Jeremy Barlow, and Tessa Newcomb — and manages the logistics of estate clearances for families who need a thorough, thoughtful service.

Where we work

We take instructions across Norfolk, Suffolk, Essex, and Cambridgeshire, and handle collections anywhere in the UK. For major collections or significant single works, distance is not a barrier.
